not in our stars, but in ourselves
Yesterday, as you had better know, was Beyoncé’s 34th birthday.
Today would be Freddie Mercury’s 69th birthday.
I hope you all take some time this weekend to reflect on how lucky we are, on this miserable rock, to be graced with such talent, charisma, dedication, and – most importantly – fun.
For your enjoyment: here’s Queen’s full Live Aid set, in which Freddie has 72,000 people in the palm of his hand.
And here’s Freddie in drag, and Freddie in Nijinsky mode.
Here’s Queen Bey’s Superbowl Half Time show, which will never be surpassed during my lifetime, I feel sure (unless she does another one).
And here she is, elevating a mediocrity to soaring new heights, as I’ve said before.
(You know the part in Amadeus when Mozart takes Salieri’s “little march of welcome,” and transforms it into “Non più andrai” from The Marriage of Figaro? That’s what Beyoncé did with this. She is an alchemist.)
Anyway, be regal this weekend, in their honor. Bring joy to others, and let that joy reflect on you. That’s what being a queen is all about, right?
